Portland Public Schools Kindergarten Transition Study

Efficacy of MindUP on Children's Development of SEL and Academic Skills (2018 - 2023)This project, funded by the Institute of Education Sciences and led by Co-PIs Andy Mashburn and Robert Roeser, involves an experimental study testing the effects of MindUP (a mindfulness-based social emotional learning program) on young children’s development of social-emotional, self-regulatory, and academic skills. The project includes 120 preschool classrooms across the Portland area and provides resources to teachers (curriculum, materials, training, coaching) to support their implementation of the program.

Past Projects.
Evaluation of the Impacts and Implementation of the WINGS for Kids Social and Emotional Learning After-school Program (2011-2017). This project, funded by the Institute of Education Sciences and the Social Innovation Fund, was a collaboration with the Portland State University (Co-PI; Andy Mashburn), the University of Virginia and the College of Charleston. The project involved a study of the efficacy of this after-school SEL program in elementary schools in Charleston, SC, on kindergartners’ long-term development of academic, social-emotional, and self-regulatory skills.
Evaluation of the Implementation of Multnomah County’s Early Kindergarten Transition Program (2012-2016). This project, funded by the PSU Faculty Enhancement grant and Multnomah County (PI; Andy Mashburn), involved interviews and observations of the EKT program to generate a program theory of change and a set of best practices for improving the implementation of this summer transition program for entering kindergartners and their families.
Empowering Pre-K – 3 (MP3): Examining the Effects of the MPower and MindUp Mindfulness Interventions (2013-2016). This project, led by PI Robert Roeser and funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, involved studying the implementation and impacts of the MPOWER program for teachers and the MindUP program for children in preschool through 3rd grade classes in Vancouver, Washington.
Testing the Efficacy of Mindfulness Training for Teachers on Improving Classroom Settings for Early Adolescents (2014-2017). This project, funded by the WT Grant Foundation and the Spencer Foundation and led by Co-PIs Robert Roeser, Andy Mashburn and Ellen Skinner, involved an experimental study of the impacts of mindfulness training for middle school teachers in Portland Public Schools on their occupational health and well-being and the quality of their classroom interactions with students.

This project, funded by Multnomah County and led by PI Andy Mashburn, involved focus groups, interviews and observations of the P-3 schools program to generate a program theory of change and a set of best practices for improving the implementation of this program for young children and their families.
School Profiles of Kindergarten Readiness in Oregon (2017-2018). This project, funded by the Oregon Community Foundation, and led by PI Andy Mashburn, involved interviews with key stakeholders to summarize the current ways they use the statewide Oregon Kindergarten Assessment and to offer recommendations for future uses.
